Features Editorial: Ladies, you are slacking

The cold weather is here and the sweatpants are coming out, but not for long. I have noticed that here at University of Waterloo people are releasing their laziness and walking around campus with their track pants and baggy sweaters.
Now I know how hard it is to get out of your warm and comfy beds, to have the motivation to do your make-up, and to be faced with the stress of finding a nice outfit to wear. However, there is no need to slack on your appearance this winter. That’s why I am here to motivate you just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean your outfit needs to be baggy and weak.
I have come up with only three easy things that can help you get through this winter without feeling tired and sluggish. It is a fact that whatever you put on in the morning actually affects your feelings for the whole day.
If you put sweatpants on and a sweater, yeah, you’ll feel comfortable, but do you feel beautiful, or do you just feel tired?
Well I have three tips for you: layers, accessories, and boots.
1. Layers. You can layer your outfit so that as the day warms up, you can remove layers, or you can keep all your layers on if you’re in a cold area. So start with a nice tank top and add on from there.
2. Accessories. Make hats and scarves your best friends this winter. There are so many different colours, shapes, and patterns you can find for cheap and still look hot pulling it off. Scarves are a big hit this year so spice your look up with a nice scarf to top off your outfit. You don’t just have to keep it on when you’re outside. Find a scarf that goes well with your outfit and wear it all day long.
3. Boots. Finding a comfortable pair of boots is a must. UGGs are a good replacement for your comfy slippers. You don’t need to go buy a thousand pairs of boots for every outfit you wear. Just find one pair you really like that will go well with everything you wear and you’ll be set every day. However, there is nothing wrong with having a variety to choose from.
Another little tip for you is that coloured cordarounds are back in style. So replace your boring jeans with a comfortable and warm pair of cordarounds, but keep in mind that pants are not your only option. Dresses and skirts are still an option as long as you wear a nice pair of sweater tights. They are extremely and totally fashionable. So ladies keep your style alive all year long.

While I think your suggestions are pretty good and practical for those looking for them and I appreciate that you’re sort of framing this as being about ‘feeling good’, I find it also comes across as suggesting that women have a duty or obligation to look “beautiful” — and that “beautiful” means wearing makeup and putting a certain amount of effort into one’s appearance, and I find that troubling.
TOTALLY agree with Laura. Pretty troubling article if I do say so myself. Maybe I don’t feel like being beautiful today! Or ever! You could write an article about more fashion forward forms of “lazy” dressing…that would probably be a more positive message for everyone.
